To be perfectly honest, at first, I had no idea who The Foxes was. I was automatically drawn to the indie group from London though, and I wasn’t disappointed in the 4 tracks offered on their EP Depression, Joy, & a Moment of Fame. With nothing more to go off on than an EP released three years prior (Lover, Killer), it really is difficult to show development, yet this foursome somehow managed to do that.
The EP seems to gradually change, first giving you a catchy, upbeat tune in “Get Me,” going down one step on the ladder to “Something About You,” and before you know it there are the slower pieces known as “No Reply” and “Country Low.” My first impression of “Get Me” was that this track had me reminiscing The Clash, and there was a mix of the Kaiser Chiefs. I highly recommend The Foxes if you’re a fan of either. Then with “Country Low,” I was very keen on how they put in the sound of rain in the background to set the mood. Not many songs pull it off, I’ll admit that, but (again) somehow this happened to fit well.
Singer and frontman Nigel Thomas has the unique voice, nonetheless, that I haven’t heard anyone else quite capture. The lyrics used are easy to sing along to as well, no matter if you are an old-timer fan or a new listener. Having released the music video for “Get Me” earlier this year in February, you can take a look at it on youtube. With this being said, The Foxes have plans of releasing a studio album sometime this year. Nothing is set in stone yet however, you’ll have to keep your eyes open for that.
